2M Blue
The 2M Blue is designed for precise and accurate retrieval of the information in the record groove. Indeed, it is Ortofon's lasting philosophy to only ever play the recorded sound, without colouration.

To obtain a flat frequency response, as with a Moving Coil cartridge, Ortofon are using split pole pins in the 2M design, to reduce the eddy current. The split pole pins are an Ortofon invention which was originally presented in the 500 and Super OM series, to great effect. The 2M Red and 2M Blue both use the same engine with split pole pins. With this improved engine Ortofon have been able to increase the output to an impressive 5.5 mV.

The 2M technology
Both the 2M Red and 2M Blue have diamonds which are polished to the highest standards of the industry. 2M Red has a tipped elliptical diamond, and the 2M Blue has a nude elliptical diamond. The design has been optimised for easy mounting on to a tonearm; the weight and size of all 2M models is well-suited to fit the most common turntables on today's market. The 2M Red and 2M Blue also have interchangeable stylus units, and replacement styli are readily available in the UK.

About the unique 2M design
2M was developed by Ortofon in conjunction with "Møller Jensen Design" from Copenhagen, Denmark - the same designer who collaborated on the award-winning MC Jubilee cartridge, and the coveted Kontrapunkt series. The inspiration for designing the 2M was related to the facets of the diamond - elegantly concentrating its contours against the grooves on the record surface. The name 2M was selected among several ideas. Ortofon wanted a modern name which would be easy to pronounce around the world, and to remember. Therefore an alpha-numerical name was chosen... 2M means MM, which is simply the common abbreviation for Moving Magnet.

The 2M range has been structured in the same way as the popular Rondo and Cadenza Moving Coil series, with ascending quality as you move from Red - Blue - Bronze - Black. The spectacular 2m Black has become the flagship of 2M, and all Ortofon moving magnet cartridges. 2M was also the last product  designed by Ortofon's former chief engineer, Per Windfield. He developed the 2M series over the final 2 years of his 30 year tenure with Ortofon.

The 2M series of cartridges are now also available in a special version, suited for bottom-mount tonearms.

Replacement stylus for the 2M Blue moving magnet cartridge.

All 2M cartridges' styli can be interchanged with replacement styli from the rest of the series, but the 2M Bronze and Black have a superior cartridge body, when compared to the 2M Red and Blue. You will therefore not get the full performance of a 2M Black by placing a 2M Black Stylus on a 2M Red body - though the sound will be vastly improved. Similarly, a 2M Red Stylus will be a notable downgrade to a 2M Bronze or Black cartridge.

The 2M Blue boasts optimised sound reproduction and high level of sonic accuracy.

  • Dynamic cartridge with increased resolution and a more open sound
  • Nude Elliptical diamond stylus profile
  • Stylus fits on other models in the Ortofon 2M range
  • Replacement stylus only

2M Blue Technology

The 2M Blue has a diamond which has been polished to the highest standards of the industry. This nude elliptical diamond guarantees a solid sonic performance with capable and dynamic tracking of the record groove.

The design has been optimised for easy mounting onto a tonearm; the weight and size of all 2M models are well-suited to fit the most common turntables in today's market.

2M Blue Sound

The 2M Blue, as a step up from the Red, adds more dynamics and resolution, sounds more open, and reproduces more details.

The 2M Blue is the first step on the path to better sound; As with the rest of the 2M Range the styli are interchangeable, but due to the cartridge body design the perfect pair to the Blue is the Red. Meaning that the 2M Blue is the undisputed best option to upgrade from a 'fitted-from-new' 2M Red model turntable.

The 2M range consists of four core colour models along with Mono and 78 RPM versions, making the 2M range incredibly versatile and capable of fulfilling your need whatever your system. Click here to view more about the shared 2M elements across the range.

Get The Right Model For You

The 2M Blue is available in different versions to suit different applications. The 2M Verso is for bottom-mounted headshells, the 2M Pre-Mounted includes a regular 2M cartridge fitted to an Ortofon SH-4 Headshell, and the 2MR offers a reduced cartridge height for mounting onto tonearms that require a lower ride height. Modding your turntable via Pro-Ject's RPM1 Carbon

"With any turntable, when you’re looking to improve its sonics you should always look towards the cartridge before moving elsewhere. After all, this is where the information is dragged from the grooves. You need to get rid of this potential bottleneck first. That’s what I did by upgrading the Ortofon 2M Red with a 2M Blue."

A steady hand that lets the heart of the music shine through.

"Build quality is high despite the largely plastic construction. It’s a precision moulding with a large surface area given to the removable stylus section, which should minimise any movement that can undermine this variety of cartridge."

The 2M range is a true staple of Ortofon, coming fitted as standard (for good reason) on a host of turntables around the world; they offer vastly different sound profiles., from the reliable Red to the current pinnacle of the series, the 2M Black LVB 250. it's always a treat to 'hear the difference' in our demoroom!
